Air Defence Wing

On July 1, 2023, a new military unit – the Air Defense Division – was created in the Air Force.

Air Defence Wing contributes to ensuring the integrity of the airspace of the Republic of Estonia by planning and executing active air defense operations.

The Air Defence Wing’s new mobile IRIS-T SLM (InfraRed Imaging System Tail/Thrust Vector-Controlled Surface-Launched Medium Range) air defence missile systems help prevent air attacks against friendly units, critical infrastructure and the people of Estonia in the areas where the systems are currently deployed. The Air Defence Wing’s missile batteries also limit the freedom of action of the adversary’s air attack assets. The air defence missile systems are also highly mobile, enabling them to respond to changing situations and immediate operational needs.

Permanently located in Ämari, the Air Defence Wing consists of HQ and two missile batteries.
