NATO Force Integration Unit Estonia (NFIU Estonia) has successfully completed its latest certification process, a recurring assessment during which the unit’s readiness, capabilities and ability to cooperate with higher NATO headquarters were evaluated. The assessment, which lasted nearly four months, was conducted by the Estonian Defence Forces Headquarters in cooperation with NATO’s Joint Logistics Support Group Brunssum (JLSG BS).
According to Colonel Erki Soo, Commander of the Support Command and head of the assessment team, NATO’s collective defence does not depend solely on the forces available to Allies, but also on how quickly and effectively they can be received in Estonia when needed and integrated into joint operations.
“NATO Force Integration Unit Estonia plays a vital role in this regard, serving as a link between NATO and the Estonian Defence Forces. During the assessment, I was particularly impressed by the professionalism of the NFIU team and their clear understanding of the importance of their mission,” said Colonel Soo. “The value of the assessment lies not only in the results, but also in the opportunity to learn, identify areas for improvement and thereby strengthen the unit’s readiness to carry out its tasks. The assessment also provides the NFIU Commander with an independent and comprehensive overview of the unit’s strengths and areas requiring further development, helping to establish priorities and guide the unit’s future development,” he added.
During the first phase of the assessment, the unit’s documentation and procedures were reviewed. The second and third phases focused on evaluating the unit’s capabilities during the planning exercise and execution of NATO exercise Steadfast Duel 26. Among other things, the assessment examined NFIU Estonia’s ability to ensure the necessary conditions for NATO forces deploying to Estonia and to provide them with initial situational awareness.
