Construction of new infrastructure began immediately after the establishment of the Air Base in 1997. The first major construction phase took place in 2008–2012, during which a new aircraft movement area, the necessary roads, base defence facilities, hangars, workshops, warehouses, headquarters buildings, a medical centre, dining facility, accommodation building, sports facilities and other infrastructure were built at Ämari.
In 2024–2025, the aircraft movement area underwent renovation. In addition, new barracks, an accommodation building, a larger dining facility, a fuel storage facility, storage buildings, hangars and other infrastructure were constructed at the base.
Today, Ämari Air Base is the only air base in Estonia and one of the most modern in the Baltic region, hosting and supporting the deployment and operations of Allied fighter, transport and other air units. The Air Base is able to provide good conditions for Allies serving far from home. The development of the Air Base is ongoing and continues to progress year by year.
In addition to operating the airfield and hosting Allied units, modern Ämari Air Base also serves as a support base for the Estonian Air Force’s air surveillance and air defence units, as well as for other units and subunits of the Estonian Defence Forces.
