On Friday, June 12, NATO’s multinational medical exercise Vigorous Warrior 2026 entered its active phase, during which the allied and partner nations are training together in Estonia to ensure military medical support, enhance interoperability between medical units, and implement innovative medical solutions.
„Exercise Vigorous Warrior 2026 provides a unique opportunity for the Estonian Defence Forces to practice medical support on such a scale in an international environment in Estonia, as a potential frontline state during a full-scale military conflict, including cooperation between military and civilian medical systems,” said Surgeon General Lieutenant Colonel Indrek Olveti.
The active phase of the exercise will take place from June 12 to 17, during which the entire medical support process will be practiced under conditions of military conflict. The training includes casualty management on site, stabilizing and evacuating patients, also treatment at higher levels of military medical care. In addition, the exercise will focus on ensuring continuous medical care for the injured in an multinational environment and establishing a unified picture of medical operational awareness.
„For me, the greatest value of Vigorous Warrior is the opportunity to stay connected to the lessons of current conflicts and to understand how modern threats continue to evolve. At the same time, it brings together medical professionals and military personnel from many nations, allowing us to learn from each other, improve interoperability, and build the relationships that are essential during real-world operations,“ said Lieutenant Colonel Jan Přikryl, Chief of the Medical Detachment of the 43rd Airborne Regiment of the Czech Armed Forces.
The exercise also focuses on international medical logistics, including the replenishment of blood supplies and the coordination of logistics procedures, to ensure effective medical support in diverse and rapidly changing situations throughout an operation.
In addition to military medical specialists, representatives from the civilian healthcare sector are also participating in the exercise to practice joint procedures and ensure continuity of medical care in crisis or wartime situations.
„Vigorous Warrior 2026 will allow the Estonian Health Board to practice the functioning of the healthcare system in a wartime scenario in the most realistic way possible. We will test our staff operations, cooperation with hospitals and ambulance command centers, and how information flows and decisions are made under high workload and in circumstances that are rapidly changing. The exercise’s primary objective is to learn, confirm what works well, and identify areas that require further development in order to ensure the resilience and continuity of the healthcare system even in the most challenging circumstances,” said Ahti Varblane, advisor to the Estonian Health Board, on the significance of the exercise.
Vigorous Warrior is NATO’s largest multinational medical exercise series. Organized every two years by the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine in cooperation with a volunteer host nation, the exercise focuses on military medical support in a multinational environment, emphasizing interoperability, medical readiness, and cooperation between civilian and military medical systems.
