On Monday, June 1, the Estonian Defence Forces concluded the largest exercise of the year, Spring Storm 2026. At its peak, the exercise involved more than 12,000 troops from Estonia and Allied countries, bringing together military personnel from various countries to jointly practice defending Estonia on Estonian soil and, for the first time, in northeastern Latvia. The primary training audiences of the exercise were the 2nd Infantry Brigade (Estonian Division) and Regional Command South (Estonian Defence League).

On Thursday, May 28, as part of the live-fire phase of the exercise Spring Storm 2026 at the Estonian Defence Forces’ Central Training Area, artillery units from Estonia, France, and the United Kingdom conducted a joint live-fire exercise to support the manoeuvres of the 2nd Infantry Brigade during their live-fire exercise.

At noon of May 19, 2026 an unmanned aerial system entered Estonian airspace from Russian airspace in the South-Eastern corner of Estonia, heading towards North-East. The unmanned aerial system was likely of Ukrainian origin. 

From May 10–17, during the combat enhancement and force integration training (CET/FIT) phase of the exercise Spring Storm 2026, reservists will practice both offensive and reconnaissance operations using unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as defence against unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, units will collaborate with defence industry companies to test new technological and tactical solutions in the field of unmanned systems.

On the night of March 31, as a result of the Russian Federation's aggression against Ukraine, an air threat existed in certain areas of Estonia, during which potentially dangerous aerial vehicles could have entered Estonian airspace.

On Thursday, March 5, exercise Digital Shield 2.0 was conducted in Rutja, Estonia, during which units of the Estonian Defence Forces, the United States Army, and other allied forces practiced repelling unmanned aerial vehicles. During the exercise, Estonian and Allied sensors and command centres were linked to a real-time unified data network in order to identify threats more quickly and respond to them in a coordinated manner.

This week, the Chair of the NATO Military Committee (CMC), Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone visited Estonia, where he met with the Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces Lieutenant General Andrus Merilo, and Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur, and received an overview of the security situation in the region.
